A Specialist Immigration Legal Role

Richmond Chambers is a specialist immigration law firm based in Covent Garden, London. We combine the expertise, independence and professional standards of the Bar with the structure, support and client service of a modern legal practice.

The Legal Associate role is similar in many respects to a specialist immigration paralegal role. It involves detailed legal work, careful evidence preparation, client communication and close support for barristers. Because of the way Richmond Chambers is structured, Legal Associates also gain direct exposure to barrister-led case strategy, advocacy preparation, direct access client work and the operation of a distinctive legal business model.

Our Legal Associates work as part of small legal teams, directly with barristers who practise exclusively in immigration, asylum and nationality law. They contribute to live client matters from the earliest stages of instruction through to completion.

For candidates who are serious about a career in immigration law, the role provides the opportunity to learn how specialist immigration cases are analysed, prepared, presented and progressed in practice.

The Work We Do

Richmond Chambers practises exclusively in UK immigration, asylum and nationality law.

Our work includes family migration, work and business immigration, sponsor licensing, Global Talent, student and graduate routes, settlement, British citizenship, human rights and asylum claims, appeals, administrative review and judicial review.

Some matters involve detailed applications and careful evidence preparation. Others involve urgent advice, complex factual histories, tribunal proceedings or litigation. The work is varied, often demanding and frequently of real importance to clients, their families, their businesses and their future in the UK.

What Our Legal Associates Do

Legal Associates undertake supervised legal work across the full range of our immigration practice, supporting barristers with the preparation and progression of client matters.

No two days are the same. One day might involve reconstructing a client’s immigration history for a complex settlement application. Another could involve analysing evidence for a Global Talent application, preparing an appeal bundle for the First-tier Tribunal, researching an issue under the Immigration Rules or helping a barrister prepare for a conference with a business client.

The work may include preparing chronologies, reviewing documents, drafting attendance notes, assisting with legal representations, organising evidence for an application or judicial review, liaising with clients about outstanding information and preparing matters for barrister review.

Throughout, Legal Associates work closely with barristers to ensure that matters are thoroughly prepared, clients remain informed and important developments are identified and escalated where legal advice, strategy or professional judgment is required.

The role demands intellectual curiosity, careful analysis and exceptional attention to detail. Immigration law is highly fact-sensitive, and seemingly minor details in documents, dates or evidence can have a significant impact on the preparation of a case.

Learning From Specialist Barristers

One of the things that distinguishes Richmond Chambers is the level of day-to-day access Legal Associates have to experienced immigration barristers.

We work closely together, discuss cases openly and encourage questions. Legal Associates see how barristers analyse legal problems, assess evidence, identify risk, prepare advice, develop strategy and communicate with clients.

This is a practical learning environment. Legal Associates learn by working on real matters, reviewing real evidence, preparing real drafts and seeing how legal strategy is developed in practice.

Legal Associates learn by preparing drafts, reviewing evidence, discussing strategy, receiving comments on their work and seeing how applications, appeals and other matters develop over time.

Over time, they can expect to develop skills in legal research, evidence assessment, drafting, client communication, procedural awareness, file management and case preparation.

Where appropriate, there may also be opportunities to attend court or tribunal hearings, observe advocacy, assist with hearing preparation and discuss litigation strategy with the supervising barrister. The role does not involve practising as a barrister or exercising independent rights of audience, but it can provide useful preparation for candidates considering pupillage or a future career at the Bar.

As Legal Associates gain experience and confidence, they may be trusted with increasing levels of responsibility appropriate to their knowledge and ability, always with supervision and support from experienced barristers.

The role can support a range of career paths. Many candidates will see it as valuable preparation for pupillage or a future career at the Bar. Others may wish to develop as specialist immigration paralegals, immigration caseworkers or legal operations professionals.

Client Contact and Matter Progression

Direct access work is central to the Richmond Chambers model. Legal Associates therefore gain experience not only of legal research and drafting, but also of professional client-facing work.

Under supervision, they may assist with client communications, document requests, progress updates and preparation before and after conferences. They help clients understand what has been requested, what remains outstanding and what the next agreed step will be.

They also play an important role in helping matters progress efficiently. This may involve organising evidence, monitoring outstanding documents, preparing matters for barrister review and identifying issues that need to be escalated because they require legal advice, strategy or professional judgment.

This is an important part of the Richmond Chambers approach. Clients receive a coordinated service from a legal team, while barristers are able to focus their time on legal advice, strategy, drafting, advocacy and decision-making.
