UK Global Talent Visa for Digital Technology: Tech Nation Endorsement & How to Apply

The UK Global Talent visa for digital technology is for leaders and potential leaders in the digital technology sector who wish to work in the UK without employer sponsorship.

Most digital technology applicants must first obtain an endorsement from Tech Nation. Tech Nation assesses whether the applicant has shown exceptional talent or exceptional promise in the digital technology field. Some applicants can apply directly for the visa without endorsement if they have won an eligible prestigious digital technology prize.

The route is flexible. A Global Talent visa holder can generally work as an employee, be self-employed, be a director of a company, change jobs, start or run a business and undertake voluntary work. The route can also lead to indefinite leave to remain after either 3 years or 5 years, depending on the basis of the application.

This guide explains the Global Talent digital technology visa requirements, Tech Nation endorsement criteria, evidence, prestigious prizes, fees, processing times, dependants, extensions, settlement and refusal remedies.

1. What Is the Global Talent Visa for Digital Technology?

The Global Talent visa is a UK immigration route for individuals aged 18 or over who can show exceptional talent or exceptional promise in a qualifying field. Digital technology is one of the recognised Global Talent fields.

For digital technology applicants, the route is intended for individuals with technical or business expertise who are leaders or potential leaders in the digital technology sector. The route can be suitable for founders, senior executives, product leaders, engineers, developers, data specialists, AI specialists, cybersecurity specialists, gaming professionals, fintech specialists, investors and other technology professionals whose work falls within the Tech Nation criteria.

Digital Technology Within the Global Talent Route

Digital technology applicants can apply as either:

  • Exceptional Talent applicants, if they are already recognised as leaders in the digital technology field; or
  • Exceptional Promise applicants, if they are potential leaders with a developing track record.

The distinction is important. It affects the evidence required for endorsement and the qualifying period for settlement. Exceptional Talent applicants may be eligible for indefinite leave to remain after 3 years, while Exceptional Promise applicants will normally need 5 years.

Tech Nation as the Endorsing Body

Tech Nation is the endorsing body for digital technology Global Talent applications. The endorsement stage is an expert assessment of whether the applicant meets the digital technology criteria.

The endorsement is not a general assessment of whether the applicant works in the technology sector. It is a specialist assessment of whether the applicant has shown the necessary level of leadership, potential leadership, innovation, recognition, contribution and impact in a relevant digital technology field.

Technical and Business Applicants

Digital technology applicants may apply as technical applicants or business applicants.

Technical applicants may include software engineers, data scientists, AI specialists, cybersecurity experts, platform engineers, principal developers, product-focused technologists, gaming developers, hardware engineers, operating systems engineers and other specialists with proven technical expertise.

Business applicants may include founders, senior executives, product managers, commercial leaders, growth leaders, senior investors and other applicants with commercial, investment or product expertise in digital product businesses.

The category selected should reflect the applicant’s actual evidence. A job title is not decisive. The application should show how the applicant’s work fits within the digital technology criteria.

No Job Offer or Sponsor Requirement

The Global Talent route does not require a UK job offer, Certificate of Sponsorship or sponsor licence.

This can make the route attractive to applicants who need flexibility, including founders, employees, consultants, directors, freelancers and applicants who intend to develop or scale a technology business in the UK.

2. Global Talent Digital Technology Visa Requirements

To qualify for a Global Talent visa as a digital technology applicant, an applicant must satisfy the validity, suitability and eligibility requirements in Appendix Global Talent.

In broad terms, an applicant must:

  • Be aged 18 or over on the date of application;
  • Apply online using the correct application form;
  • Pay the relevant application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge;
  • Provide biometrics where required;
  • Provide a valid passport or travel document;
  • Hold a valid Tech Nation endorsement, unless applying on the basis of an eligible prestigious prize;
  • Apply for the visa within 3 months of the date of the endorsement letter if relying on endorsement;
  • Show that the endorsement or prize has not been withdrawn or suspended;
  • Provide written consent if required because of a recent Government or international scholarship award;
  • Provide a tuberculosis certificate if Appendix Tuberculosis applies;
  • Meet the suitability requirements under Part Suitability.

An applicant applying from outside the UK must obtain entry clearance as a Global Talent migrant before travelling to the UK.

Tech Nation Endorsement or Prestigious Prize

Most digital technology applicants must obtain endorsement from Tech Nation before applying for the visa. The endorsement confirms that Tech Nation considers the applicant to meet the Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise criteria for digital technology.

An applicant who has won an eligible prestigious digital technology prize does not need Tech Nation endorsement. They may instead apply directly for the visa on the basis of the prize.

Suitability Requirements

Applicants must not fall for refusal under Part Suitability of the Immigration Rules. This may include issues relating to criminality, deception, immigration history, exclusion, unpaid litigation debt or other conduct-based concerns.

Where the applicant is applying from inside the UK, they must not be in breach of immigration laws or on immigration bail, unless a relevant exception applies.

Applicants with previous refusals, overstaying, cancellation decisions, criminal matters or other immigration-history concerns should take advice before applying.

No Initial English Language or Maintenance Requirement

There is no English language requirement for an initial Global Talent visa application. There is also no separate financial maintenance funds requirement for the main applicant under Appendix Global Talent.

English language becomes relevant at the settlement stage, unless an exemption applies.

3. Tech Nation Endorsement Requirements for Digital Technology Applicants

For a Tech Nation digital technology endorsement, the applicant must satisfy the endorsing body that they have been recognised as either an exceptional talent or someone with exceptional promise in the digital technology field in the last 5 years.

The applicant must also show that they are either:

  • A technical applicant with proven technical expertise in the latest technologies in building, using, deploying or exploiting a technology stack and building technical infrastructure; or
  • A business applicant with proven commercial, investment or product expertise in building digital products or leading investments in significant digital product businesses.

Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise

Exceptional Talent is for applicants who are already recognised as leaders in the digital technology sector. The evidence should show a strong record of innovation, recognition, contribution and impact.

Exceptional Promise is for applicants who are potential leaders. Applicants under this category are usually earlier in their digital technology career, although they may have had a longer career in another sector before moving into technology. They must still show strong evidence of potential leadership through their skills and achievements.

The correct category should be chosen carefully. An applicant with a strong but developing technology profile may be better presented under Exceptional Promise. An applicant with substantial leadership, innovation and impact may be better presented under Exceptional Talent.

Technical Applicants

Technical applicants should show proven technical expertise in a relevant digital technology field.

Examples may include:

  • Artificial intelligence, natural language processing and machine learning;
  • Cybersecurity;
  • Data science and data engineering;
  • Back-end, front-end or mobile development;
  • Principal software engineering;
  • DevOps, SysOps or infrastructure engineering;
  • Operating systems;
  • Hardware engineering;
  • Gaming;
  • Virtual or augmented reality;
  • UX or UI design in a product-led technology context.

Technical evidence should usually show more than employment in a technical role. It should demonstrate leadership, innovation, significant contribution, recognition or impact in the field.

Business Applicants

Business applicants should show proven commercial, investment or product expertise in building digital products or leading investments in significant digital product businesses.

Examples may include:

  • Founders and co-founders of digital technology businesses;
  • C-suite executives or senior operational leaders in technology businesses;
  • Product managers and product leaders;
  • Commercial, growth, sales or distribution leaders in digital businesses;
  • Senior investors with a track record of leading investments in digital businesses;
  • SaaS or enterprise sales leaders in digital services;
  • Performance marketing specialists working in-house for digital businesses;
  • Sector-specific technology leaders, such as fintech, edtech, healthtech or gaming specialists.

Business applicants should show that their work is connected to digital product businesses, not merely to technology-enabled services.

Product-Led Digital Technology Businesses

A central issue in many Tech Nation endorsement applications is whether the applicant’s experience is in a product-led digital technology business.

A product-led digital technology business will usually create software, hardware, data-processing technology, digital products or technology platforms. The applicant’s role should relate to building, scaling, investing in or significantly contributing to such products or businesses.

A business that uses technology to deliver services is not necessarily a product-led digital technology business. For example, a marketing agency, outsourcing company, consultancy or service-delivery business may use sophisticated technology but still fall outside the intended scope if the applicant’s work is not connected to building or scaling digital products.

Roles and Specialisms That May Not Be Suitable

Some technology-related roles may not be suitable for Tech Nation endorsement, even where the applicant is experienced or senior.

Profiles that may be problematic include:

  • Corporate roles or experience managing large corporate teams where the evidence does not show relevant digital technology leadership;
  • Junior investor or analyst roles without a senior investment track record;
  • Service delivery or process delivery roles;
  • Outsourcing roles;
  • Technical or management consultancy roles;
  • ERP consultancy;
  • Systems administration;
  • Roles in tech-enabled or service companies where the applicant’s work is not in-house product-led digital technology work.

These exclusions are fact-sensitive. A candidate should not assume that their case is weak merely because their job title appears service-oriented, but the evidence must clearly show a qualifying digital technology profile.

4. Evidence for a Tech Nation Digital Technology Endorsement

A Tech Nation endorsement application should be prepared as an evidence-led application. The applicant must show that they meet the digital technology endorsement criteria, not simply that they are skilled, experienced or successful.

Digital Technology CV

The applicant must provide a CV with career and publication history included.

The CV should be clear, typed and structured to highlight the applicant’s relevant digital technology experience, technical or business skills, leadership roles, product work, innovation, commercial impact, publications, speaking, awards, investment, open-source contributions, mentorship, research and future plans.

The CV should support the wider evidence. It should not be treated as a substitute for recommendation letters or supporting documents.

Three Letters of Recommendation

A Tech Nation endorsement application must include 3 dated letters of recommendation from 3 different well-established individuals acknowledged as experts in the digital technology field.

Each author must have detailed knowledge of the applicant’s work over a period of at least 12 months. The letters should support the Global Talent application and explain:

  • How the author knows the applicant;
  • The applicant’s achievements in the relevant field;
  • How the author considers the applicant to show exceptional talent or exceptional promise;
  • The contribution the applicant would be expected to make to the UK digital economy.

The letters should be specific and evidence-based. Generic letters that simply praise the applicant as talented, hard-working or promising are unlikely to be persuasive.

A strong recommendation letter will usually combine the author’s standing in the field, direct knowledge of the applicant’s work, clear examples of achievement and a reasoned explanation of why the applicant meets the Global Talent threshold.

Up to 10 Pieces of Supporting Evidence

The applicant may provide up to 10 supporting documents to prove that they meet the eligibility criteria. The CV and recommendation letters do not count towards this limit.

The evidence should address the mandatory recognition requirement and at least 2 of the relevant criteria for Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise.

Supporting evidence may include:

  • Product evidence;
  • Evidence of innovation;
  • Evidence of technical leadership;
  • Evidence of commercial impact;
  • Evidence of investment or fundraising;
  • Evidence of open-source contribution;
  • Evidence of speaking at significant conferences;
  • Evidence of mentoring or collaborative projects;
  • Evidence of media recognition;
  • Evidence of awards or prizes;
  • Evidence of published or expert-endorsed research;
  • Evidence of salary, remuneration or seniority where relevant;
  • Evidence of product metrics, users, revenue, growth or market reach.

Each item of evidence should be selected for a clear purpose. Applicants should avoid submitting impressive but unfocused material that does not map to the criteria.

Proof of Connection to a Technology Business

If the applicant has been a founder or senior executive of a technology business in the last 5 years, they must provide evidence of their connection to that business.

This may include evidence of shareholding, company records, accounts, sales, customer numbers, investment, leadership role, business dissolution or other documentation showing the applicant’s involvement and the commercial position of the business.

This requirement is particularly important for founders, co-founders, chief executives, chief technology officers, product leaders and other senior executives relying on product-led business experience.

Common Evidence Problems

Tech Nation endorsement applications can be refused because the evidence is not sufficiently targeted.

Common issues include:

  • Evidence that shows employment, but not leadership or potential leadership;
  • Evidence that does not show the applicant’s individual contribution;
  • Recommendation letters that are too generic;
  • Evidence from a company that is tech-enabled rather than product-led;
  • Consultancy, outsourcing or systems roles presented as product-led technology work without adequate explanation;
  • Evidence of internal work only, without recognition beyond ordinary employment;
  • Claims of innovation that are not supported by technical, commercial or external evidence;
  • Product evidence that does not show scale, users, impact or market relevance;
  • Investor evidence that does not show seniority or a leading investment track record;
  • Evidence that does not clearly distinguish between Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise.

A strong application should explain the applicant’s field, category, role, achievements and impact in a way that is coherent to both immigration decision-makers and expert technology assessors.

5. Exceptional Talent Evidence for Digital Technology Applicants

A digital technology applicant applying as an Exceptional Talent applicant must show that they are already a leader in the digital technology field.

They must show recognition as a leading talent in the last 5 years and provide evidence addressing at least 2 of the permitted criteria.

Innovation as a Founder, Senior Executive or Employee

An Exceptional Talent applicant may rely on a proven track record of innovation as a founder or senior executive of a product-led digital technology company, or as an employee working on a new digital field or concept.

Founder or senior executive evidence may include product launches, technical architecture, patents, user growth, revenue, funding, product-market impact, market disruption, acquisition, scaling, international expansion or other evidence showing innovation and leadership.

Employee evidence should show that the applicant worked on a new digital technology field or concept and made a significant individual contribution. It should not simply describe normal delivery of assigned duties.

Recognition for Work Beyond Occupation

An Exceptional Talent applicant may rely on proof of recognition for work beyond their occupation that contributes to the advancement of the digital technology field.

This may include:

  • Mentoring;
  • Open-source leadership;
  • Community leadership;
  • Significant speaking engagements;
  • Published thought leadership;
  • Advisory work;
  • Contributions to recognised industry initiatives;
  • Collaborative projects that advanced the field.

The evidence should show recognition and contribution beyond the applicant’s paid employment. Ordinary internal work for an employer is unlikely to be sufficient for this criterion unless it is supported by evidence of wider field-level impact.

Significant Technical, Commercial or Entrepreneurial Contributions

An Exceptional Talent applicant may rely on evidence that they have made significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions to the field as a founder, senior executive, board member or employee of a product-led digital technology company.

Technical contributions might include product architecture, platform development, infrastructure, AI models, data systems, security systems, performance improvements or other technical advances.

Commercial contributions might include scaling revenue, entering new markets, building strategic partnerships, leading growth, increasing users, securing enterprise clients or developing commercially successful digital products.

Entrepreneurial contributions might include founding, scaling, raising investment, launching new products, building teams or creating new market opportunities.

Academic Contributions and Research

An Exceptional Talent applicant may rely on evidence of exceptional ability in the field through academic contributions, such as research published or endorsed by an expert.

This may be relevant to applicants whose digital technology work has a strong research component, including AI, machine learning, computer science, cybersecurity, data science, human-computer interaction or other technical fields.

The evidence should show why the research is significant and how it demonstrates the applicant’s exceptional ability in digital technology.

6. Exceptional Promise Evidence for Digital Technology Applicants

A digital technology applicant applying as an Exceptional Promise applicant must show that they are a potential leader in the digital technology field and that they are at an early stage in their career.

They must show recognition as a potential talent in the last 5 years and provide evidence addressing at least 2 of the permitted criteria.

Innovation as a Founder or Employee

An Exceptional Promise applicant may rely on evidence of innovation as a founder of a product-led digital technology company, or as an employee working on a new digital field or concept.

The threshold is different from Exceptional Talent, but the evidence must still show genuine innovation. It should identify the product, technology, concept, applicant’s role and why the work is innovative.

Recognition Beyond Occupation

An Exceptional Promise applicant may rely on proof of recognition for work beyond their occupation that contributes to the advancement of the digital technology field.

This may include mentoring, community work, open-source contributions, hackathons, industry speaking, collaborative projects, developer-community leadership or other activity showing contribution beyond normal employment.

The evidence should show recognition by others and a meaningful contribution to the digital technology sector.

Significant Contributions to Product-Led Digital Technology

An Exceptional Promise applicant may rely on evidence that they have made significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions to the field as a founder or employee of a product-led digital technology company.

This criterion can be useful for applicants who have made a meaningful contribution to a growing company or product but do not yet have the depth of evidence required for Exceptional Talent.

The applicant’s contribution must be clear. Where the evidence relates to a team or company achievement, the application should identify what the applicant personally did.

Academic Contributions and Early-Career Requirement

An Exceptional Promise applicant may rely on evidence of exceptional ability through academic contributions, such as research endorsed by an expert.

The applicant must also be at an early stage in their career. This does not always mean that the applicant is young or newly qualified. A person may have a longer career in another field and still be at an early stage in their digital technology career. The evidence should explain the applicant’s career trajectory where this is relevant.

7. How Tech Nation Assesses Digital Technology Applications

Tech Nation will assess whether the applicant meets the relevant Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise criteria. The assessment is holistic, but the application must still address the specific requirements.

Career History and International Standing

Tech Nation may consider the applicant’s career history, including the international reputation and impact of their work.

For some applicants, international standing may be shown through global product reach, users in multiple markets, international clients, international media, cross-border investment, speaking engagements, publications, open-source adoption or work with globally recognised technology businesses.

For others, the evidence may be more sector-specific. A highly specialised technical applicant may show standing through expert endorsement, product impact, technical architecture, research, patents, peer recognition or adoption by significant users.

Strength of Recommendation Letters and Evidence

The strength of the recommendation letters and the supporting evidence is central to the assessment.

The letters should not merely repeat the CV. They should explain the applicant’s work, achievements, leadership or potential leadership, and expected contribution to the UK digital economy.

The supporting evidence should be clear, specific and independently verifiable where possible.

Contribution to the UK Digital Technology Sector

Applicants should explain how they would contribute to the UK digital technology sector by being based in the UK.

This may include employment, founding or scaling a technology business, product development, investment, mentoring, research, collaboration, hiring, innovation, training or participation in the UK technology ecosystem.

The proposed contribution should be credible and connected to the applicant’s background.

Commercial Impact, Salary, Funding and Academic Record

Tech Nation may consider personal and professional factors such as academic track record, salary level, the company hiring the applicant, funding raised by an entrepreneur and the commercial impact of the applicant’s previous work.

These factors are not a substitute for meeting the criteria, but they can strengthen the overall case where they show the applicant’s standing, impact and credibility.

8. Digital Technology Prestigious Prize Route

Some digital technology applicants do not need Tech Nation endorsement because they have won an eligible prestigious prize.

This is not a fast-track endorsement process. It is a separate basis for applying directly for the visa without a separate endorsement stage.

When Endorsement Is Not Required

An applicant can apply directly for the Global Talent visa if they have won an eligible digital technology prize listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes.

As at 26 August 2026, the listed digital technology prizes are:

Qualifying PrizeAwarding Body
ACM Prize in ComputingAssociation for Computing Machinery
BCS Lovelace MedalBCS
Computer Pioneer Award in Honor of the Women of the ENIAC AwardIEEE Computer Society
Eckert-Mauchly AwardAssociation for Computing Machinery and IEEE Computer Society
Godel PrizeEuropean Association for Theoretical Computer Science and ACM SIGACT
IEEE John von Neumann MedalInstitute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Ken Kennedy AwardAssociation for Computing Machinery and IEEE Computer Society
Turing AwardAssociation for Computing Machinery
W. Wallace McDowell AwardIEEE Computer Society

The prize must be listed, the applicant must be the named winner and the prize must not have been withdrawn or suspended.

Named Winner and Prize Withdrawal Requirements

The applicant must be the named winner of the qualifying prize. If the applicant won as part of a group, the prize must specifically name the applicant as a member of that group.

A prize awarded to an organisation, product or project will not normally qualify unless the applicant is specifically named in connection with the prize in a way accepted by the Rules and decision-maker.

If the prize has been withdrawn or suspended, it cannot be relied upon.

Prizes Not on the List

A prize may be highly prestigious in the technology sector without qualifying for the no-endorsement route. If the prize is not listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes, the applicant will normally need to apply for Tech Nation endorsement.

Unlisted prizes may still be important evidence of Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise.

9. How to Apply for a Global Talent Visa as a Digital Technology Applicant

Digital technology applicants normally follow a two-stage process, unless they qualify through an eligible prestigious prize.

The first stage is endorsement. The second stage is the visa application.

Applying for Tech Nation Endorsement First

Many applicants apply for endorsement first. If Tech Nation endorses the application, the applicant must apply for the visa within 3 months of the date of the endorsement letter.

This approach allows the applicant to know whether the expert endorsement stage has been successful before paying for and preparing the visa stage.

An endorsement does not guarantee that the visa application will be granted. The applicant must still meet the visa-stage requirements.

Applying for Endorsement and the Visa at the Same Time

It is possible to apply for endorsement and the visa at the same time. This may be relevant where an applicant is already in the UK and their current permission is close to expiry.

However, this approach carries risk. If the endorsement is refused, the visa application will also be refused or rejected. Applicants should therefore consider carefully whether the evidence is strong enough before making simultaneous applications.

A valid in-time visa application may preserve existing permission while the visa application is pending. An endorsement-only application does not, by itself, extend immigration permission.

Current Tech Nation / Stage 1 Application Process

Digital technology applicants should now apply through the Stage 1 endorsement application process. The Home Office then sends the endorsement application to Tech Nation for assessment.

Applicants should not prepare the application on the assumption that they are submitting through a separate legacy Tech Nation application portal. The practical process and required forms should be checked before submission, especially where timing is important.

Applying From Outside the UK

An applicant applying from outside the UK must apply for entry clearance before travelling to the UK. They should ensure that they meet any applicable tuberculosis certificate requirement and that their passport or travel document is valid.

Applicants should not make travel commitments on the assumption that a decision will be made by a particular date.

Switching From Inside the UK

Some applicants can switch into the Global Talent route from inside the UK. Others must apply from overseas.

An applicant cannot switch into the Global Talent route if they are in the UK, or were last granted permission, as:

Applicants on immigration bail also cannot switch into the route.

Switching From Student Permission

Additional rules apply where the applicant is applying from inside the UK and has, or last had, Student permission.

A Student must normally either:

  • Have completed the course of study for which their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies was assigned; or
  • Be studying a full-time PhD and have completed at least 24 months of study on that course.

This may be relevant to computer science graduates, PhD candidates, AI researchers, data scientists and early-career technology applicants considering the Global Talent route before completing their current course.

Length of Permission

A Global Talent visa can be granted for up to 5 years at a time. Applicants can choose the number of full years of permission they wish to apply for.

The chosen length of permission affects the Immigration Health Surcharge payable. Some applicants choose a 3-year grant because they expect to qualify for settlement after 3 years. Others choose a longer grant to reduce the need for an extension.

There is no maximum total time limit on the Global Talent route, provided the applicant continues to meet the extension requirements.

10. Global Talent Visa Fees and Processing Times for Digital Technology Applicants

The following fees and processing times are stated as at 26 August 2026.

Endorsement and Visa Fees

Application TypeHome Office Fee
Tech Nation endorsement stage£561
Visa stage where endorsement approval is required£205
Visa application relying on an eligible prestigious prize£766
Each dependant£766
Global Talent extension£766

Where an applicant applies through the endorsement route, the total main applicant fee is £766, paid in two stages: £561 for endorsement and £205 for the visa stage.

Where an applicant applies directly on the basis of an eligible prestigious prize, the full £766 is paid at the visa stage.

Immigration Health Surcharge

Applicants and dependants must also usually pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. As at 26 August 2026, this is usually £1,035 per year for each person applying.

The amount payable depends on the length of permission requested.

Tech Nation Endorsement Timescale

Tech Nation endorsement decisions are currently usually expected within 5 to 8 weeks.

The overall timeline will also depend on how long it takes to prepare the evidence, obtain recommendation letters and finalise the endorsement application.

Visa Decision Times

For the visa stage, once an applicant has applied online, proved their identity and provided documents, a decision is usually made within:

Application LocationUsual Visa Decision Time
Outside the UK3 weeks
Inside the UK8 weeks

Faster paid services may be available in some cases.

Applicants applying from inside the UK should not travel outside the Common Travel Area while their application is pending. If they do, their application may be treated as withdrawn.

11. Working in the UK on a Global Talent Digital Technology Visa

The Global Talent route gives digital technology applicants considerable flexibility.

A Global Talent visa holder can generally:

  • Work in employment;
  • Work as a self-employed person;
  • Work as a director of a company;
  • Work as a consultant or freelancer, subject to the conditions of the visa;
  • Change jobs without making a new immigration application;
  • Work for more than one organisation;
  • Start or run a business;
  • Undertake voluntary work;
  • Study, subject to the Academic Technology Approval Scheme condition where relevant.

A Global Talent visa holder cannot work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach. The visa is also subject to a condition of no access to public funds.

Employment, Self-Employment and Director Roles

The route can be suitable for applicants who want to work for a UK technology company, join a start-up, take a director role, consult for technology businesses or work across several projects.

Unlike sponsored work routes, the applicant is not tied to a particular employer or role. This flexibility can be valuable for senior technology professionals and founders whose work may evolve quickly.

Starting or Running a Technology Business

A Global Talent visa holder can generally start or run a business in the UK. This can make the route attractive to founders, co-founders and senior technology professionals who wish to build a product-led digital technology business in the UK.

Where the applicant’s main objective is to found or scale a business, it may also be appropriate to compare Global Talent with other business immigration routes.

Keeping Records of UK Earnings

Extension and settlement applications require evidence that the applicant has earned money in the UK in their expert field. Digital technology applicants should therefore keep clear records of UK earnings and professional activity from the outset.

Relevant evidence may include employment contracts, payslips, invoices, accounts, tax documents, consultancy agreements, company records, dividend evidence, client letters, investor documents, sales records, product revenue evidence or other independently verifiable evidence.

12. Dependants of Global Talent Digital Technology Visa Holders

A Global Talent applicant may be joined or accompanied by eligible dependants. Dependants may include a partner and dependent children.

Dependant Partners

A partner may include a spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner or same-sex partner, provided the relevant relationship requirements are met.

A dependant partner must be aged 18 or over on the date of application. The relationship must be genuine and subsisting, and the couple must intend to live together throughout the applicant’s stay in the UK.

Dependant Children

A child may qualify as a dependant if the requirements in Appendix Children are met. These include relationship, care, age and independent-life requirements.

Where only one parent is applying or is in the UK, the child’s application should be considered carefully because the Rules contain specific requirements concerning parental responsibility and living arrangements.

Work and Study Rights for Dependants

Dependants can generally work in the UK, including self-employment and voluntary work. They cannot work as professional sportspersons or sports coaches.

Adult dependants may study, subject to the Academic Technology Approval Scheme condition where relevant. Dependants are also subject to a no public funds condition.

Settlement for Dependants

A dependant partner must usually complete 5 years in the UK as the dependant partner of the Global Talent migrant before qualifying for settlement.

A child may be able to apply for settlement when the relevant parent is being granted settlement, is already settled or has become a British citizen, provided the child meets the relevant requirements.

13. Extending a Global Talent Digital Technology Visa

A Global Talent digital technology visa holder can apply to extend their permission if they continue to meet the requirements of the route.

An extension applicant must show that:

  • Their Tech Nation endorsement has not been withdrawn and the relevant endorsing body continues to be approved; or
  • If they relied on a prestigious prize, the prize has not been withdrawn or suspended; and
  • They have earned money in the UK during their last period of permission in their expert field.

For a Tech Nation-endorsed applicant, the relevant field will normally be digital technology. For a prize-based applicant, the earnings must be in a field related to the subject matter of the prize.

The evidence of UK earnings must come from an independent source that can be verified if required.

There is no limit on the number of times a Global Talent visa can be extended, provided the applicant continues to meet the requirements.

14. Global Talent Digital Technology ILR: 3-Year and 5-Year Settlement Routes

The Global Talent route can lead to indefinite leave to remain, also known as settlement or ILR.

The qualifying period depends on whether the applicant was endorsed as Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise, or whether they qualified through a prestigious prize.

Exceptional Talent and 3-Year ILR

A Global Talent digital technology visa holder may qualify for settlement after 3 years if they were endorsed under the Exceptional Talent criteria by Tech Nation.

An applicant may also qualify after 3 years if they were granted their initial Global Talent permission using a prize listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes.

Exceptional Promise and 5-Year ILR

A digital technology applicant endorsed under the Exceptional Promise criteria will normally need 5 years’ continuous residence before qualifying for settlement.

This is a significant practical distinction. Applicants should consider settlement timing when deciding whether to apply under Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise, although the category selected must accurately reflect the strength and nature of the evidence.

Combining Time on Other Work Routes

The qualifying period for Global Talent settlement can include time with permission, not as a dependant, on certain other routes.

These include:

The applicant must have, or have last been granted, permission on the Global Talent route when applying for settlement.

Earnings Requirement for Settlement

A Global Talent settlement applicant must show that they have earned money in the UK during their last period of permission in their expert field.

For a Tech Nation-endorsed applicant, this will be the field of digital technology. For a prize-based applicant, the earnings must be in a field related to the subject matter of the prize.

The endorsement or prize must not have been withdrawn or suspended.

Absences and Continuous Residence

Most Global Talent settlement applicants must meet the continuous residence requirement.

The general rule is that an applicant must not have been outside the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period during the qualifying period, unless an exception applies.

Research-related absence exemptions exist for some Global Talent migrants in academic and research fields. They will not normally be relevant to digital technology applicants endorsed by Tech Nation.

Applicants should keep clear travel records, including entry and exit dates and the reason for each absence.

English Language and Life in the UK

Unless exempt, a Global Talent settlement applicant must meet the English language requirement and the Knowledge of Life in the UK requirement.

For settlement applications made before 26 March 2027, the English language requirement is speaking and listening at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

For settlement applications made on or after 26 March 2027, the English language requirement is speaking and listening at level B2, unless an exemption applies.

Applicants should plan for this change in advance, especially where their expected settlement date falls close to or after 26 March 2027.

15. Global Talent Digital Technology Visa Refusals and Challenges

Global Talent digital technology applications can be refused or rejected at the endorsement stage, visa stage, extension stage or settlement stage.

The appropriate remedy will depend on the stage of the application and the reason for refusal.

Tech Nation Endorsement Review

If Tech Nation refuses endorsement, the applicant may usually request an endorsement review. An endorsement review is not an opportunity to submit a completely new application. It is normally a request for the decision to be reviewed on the basis that an error was made in considering the evidence already submitted.

An endorsement review may be appropriate where Tech Nation appears to have misunderstood the evidence, applied the wrong criterion or overlooked relevant material.

In some cases, a fresh endorsement application with stronger or better-targeted evidence may be preferable.

Applicants should remember that requesting an endorsement review does not, by itself, extend UK immigration permission.

Administrative Review

If the visa, extension or settlement application is refused, the applicant may be able to apply for Administrative Review.

Administrative Review is concerned with caseworking error. It is not a full appeal on the merits. The application should therefore identify the alleged error clearly and explain how it affected the decision.

Fresh Applications

A fresh application may be appropriate where the refusal identifies evidential weaknesses that can be corrected, or where the applicant now has stronger evidence.

Applicants should consider timing, immigration status, application history and prospects before deciding whether to request review or make a fresh application.

Judicial Review

Judicial review may be available where there is an arguable public law error and no adequate alternative remedy. It is not a routine remedy for every refusal and should be considered carefully.

16. Frequently Asked Questions: Global Talent Visa for Digital Technology

Do Digital Technology Applicants Need a Sponsor for a Global Talent Visa?

No. The Global Talent visa is not a sponsored work route. Digital technology applicants do not need a UK job offer, Certificate of Sponsorship or sponsor licence. Most applicants must instead obtain Tech Nation endorsement, unless they have won an eligible prestigious digital technology prize.

Does Tech Nation Decide Digital Technology Endorsements?

Yes. Tech Nation assesses digital technology endorsement applications. The Home Office sends the endorsement application to Tech Nation, which assesses whether the applicant meets the Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise requirements for digital technology. If endorsement is granted, the applicant must then apply for the Global Talent visa.

What Is the Difference Between Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise?

Exceptional Talent is for applicants who are already recognised as leaders in the digital technology field. Exceptional Promise is for applicants with potential to become leaders. The distinction affects the evidence required and the qualifying period for settlement: 3 years for Exceptional Talent and normally 5 years for Exceptional Promise.

What Is a Product-Led Digital Technology Business?

A product-led digital technology business usually creates software, hardware, data-processing technology, digital products or technology platforms. A business that merely uses technology to deliver services may not qualify. This distinction is important for founders, senior executives, product leaders and business applicants relying on company evidence.

Can Consultancy or Outsourcing Experience Count?

Consultancy, outsourcing, service delivery, ERP consultancy and systems administration roles may be difficult to rely on if they do not show qualifying product-led digital technology work. The issue is fact-sensitive. The evidence must show that the applicant’s role meets the technical or business criteria for digital technology endorsement.

How Many Recommendation Letters Are Needed for Tech Nation Endorsement?

A Tech Nation endorsement application requires 3 dated letters of recommendation from 3 different well-established individuals acknowledged as experts in digital technology. Each author must have detailed knowledge of the applicant’s work over at least 12 months and must support the Global Talent application.

Can I Apply Without Tech Nation Endorsement?

Yes, but only if you have won an eligible digital technology prize listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes. If your prize is not listed, you will normally need Tech Nation endorsement, although the prize may still support your endorsement application.

Can I Apply for Endorsement and the Visa at the Same Time?

Yes. You can apply for endorsement and the visa at the same time. This may help where your current UK permission is close to expiry. However, if endorsement is refused, the visa application will also fail. Applicants should consider the strength of the evidence before choosing this approach.

Can I Switch From a Student Visa to a Global Talent Visa?

You may be able to switch from Student permission if you meet the Student-specific switching rules. You must normally have completed the course for which your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies was assigned, or be studying a full-time PhD and have completed at least 24 months of study.

Can I Start a Business on a Global Talent Digital Technology Visa?

Yes. A Global Talent visa holder can generally start or run a business in the UK. This can be particularly useful for technology founders and senior professionals who want to build or scale a product-led digital technology business in the UK without being tied to a sponsoring employer.

When Can a Digital Technology Applicant Apply for ILR?

A digital technology applicant endorsed by Tech Nation as Exceptional Talent may qualify for ILR after 3 years. An applicant endorsed as Exceptional Promise will normally need 5 years. A prize-based applicant may also qualify after 3 years. The applicant must also meet the earnings, continuous residence, English language and Life in the UK requirements.

What Can I Do if Tech Nation Refuses My Endorsement Application?

You may be able to request an endorsement review if there is an arguable error in the decision. In some cases, a fresh application with stronger evidence may be better. The right approach depends on the refusal reasons, evidence, timing and the applicant’s immigration position.

17. How Our Immigration Barristers Can Help Digital Technology Applicants

Global Talent digital technology applications are evidence-heavy and highly specialised. A successful application requires more than a strong technology career. It requires careful selection of the correct category, targeted Tech Nation evidence and a persuasive explanation of how the applicant satisfies the relevant criteria.

Our immigration barristers advise digital technology applicants at every stage of the Global Talent process, from initial eligibility assessment to Tech Nation endorsement, visa application, extension, settlement and challenge.

Eligibility and Strategy Advice

We advise digital technology applicants on whether the Global Talent route is appropriate and whether the case is better framed as Exceptional Talent, Exceptional Promise or a prestigious prize application.

Our work may include:

  • Assessing the applicant’s technical or business profile;
  • Advising on whether the applicant’s work fits the digital technology criteria;
  • Reviewing whether the relevant company is product-led;
  • Identifying risks arising from consultancy, outsourcing or service-based experience;
  • Considering whether a prestigious prize route is available;
  • Identifying immigration-history or suitability risks;
  • Advising on alternative UK immigration routes where appropriate.

A focused strategy at the outset can avoid misdirected evidence and reduce the risk of refusal.

Tech Nation Endorsement Evidence

We assist with preparing Tech Nation endorsement applications that are structured around the digital technology criteria.

Our work may include:

  • Reviewing the applicant’s CV;
  • Advising on the strongest evidence categories;
  • Reviewing recommendation letters;
  • Advising on proof of connection to a technology business;
  • Advising on evidence of innovation, recognition, contribution and impact;
  • Preparing legal representations;
  • Ensuring the application is presented clearly and coherently.

We aim to ensure that the evidence explains not only what the applicant has achieved, but why those achievements meet the Global Talent digital technology threshold.

Visa, Dependants and Timing

We advise on the immigration application following Tech Nation endorsement or where an applicant qualifies through a prestigious prize.

Our work may include:

  • Preparing the visa application;
  • Advising on applying from overseas or switching inside the UK;
  • Advising on Student route switching rules;
  • Preparing dependant applications;
  • Reviewing scholarship consent, TB and suitability issues;
  • Advising on simultaneous endorsement and visa applications;
  • Advising on timing and travel restrictions while an application is pending.

Timing can be especially important where an applicant’s current UK permission is close to expiry.

Extensions, Settlement and Challenges

We also assist Global Talent digital technology visa holders after their initial grant of permission.

Our work may include:

  • Preparing extension applications;
  • Advising on UK earnings evidence;
  • Preparing ILR applications after 3 or 5 years;
  • Advising on absences and continuous residence;
  • Preparing dependant settlement applications;
  • Requesting endorsement reviews;
  • Preparing Administrative Review applications;
  • Advising on judicial review where appropriate.

Our barristers combine detailed knowledge of the Immigration Rules with practical experience of evidence-led Global Talent applications.
