Revocation of Highly Trusted Status
London Metropolitan University has confirmed that the UK Border Agency (UKBA) has revoked its Highly Trusted Status for sponsoring international students.
In July, the UKBA had suspended the University’s Highly Trusted Sponsor status until further notice over fears that a small minority of its international students did not have accurate documentation to remain in the UK. The UKBA has now taken the decision to revoke the licence entirely.
In a statement, the University has condemned the decision and said that the implications of the revocation are hugely significant and far-reaching. It will be working very closely with the UKBA, HEFCE, the National Union of Students and its own Students’ Union to help deal with the situation.
According to the Guardian, the move leaves around 3,000 students potentially facing deportation unless they are able to find a place at another higher education establishment within 60 days.
The University has set up a help centre to support and advise students.
