Overseas Talent Key to UK Digital Revolution
An organisation representing the future of technology in the UK has launched a manifesto highlighting the significance of the global digital revolution to the UK economy, and the importance of enabling technology companies to recruit skilled workers from overseas.
TechUK’s report “Securing our Digital Future: the techUK manifesto for growth and jobs 2015-2020”, says that the effective use of digital technologies will be crucial to achieving social and economic success for future generations.
In order to achieve a positive digital future, the manifesto calls on the Government to take a number of key steps, including the creation of new leadership roles in Government and developments in data protection.
However, the manifesto also recognises the importance of having the right people in the right jobs to enable the country to achieve its digital ambitions. It therefore urges the Government to create a ‘smart migration’ policy that will enable companies to access worldwide talent and recruit skilled workers from overseas.
The manifesto also highlights the importance of migrant entrepreneurs to the UK economy by referring to a report published earlier this year by the Centre for Entrepreneurs, which found that migrant entrepreneurs are behind the creation of one in seven of all UK companies.
The report also revealed that almost half a million people from 155 countries have settled in the UK and launched businesses. In addition, migrant-founded companies are responsible for creating 14% of all jobs among the vital SME segment.
