Influx in EU Expats Applying for UK Citizenship
There has been a significant increase in the number of Europeans living in the UK applying for British Citizenships, with many fearing that the country could leave the UK according to solicitors and community leaders.
The rise in the number of applications comes following the announcement of the EU referendum, with many being unsure of the impact that the UK potentially leaving the EU would have on their life. With negotiations still to occur between the EU and the UK government, the outlook for those who have not been in the UK for at least five years and automatically acquired a permanent residence is uncertain.
Applications for citizenship rose 18% to just below 150,000 in 2015 before the EU referendum date was announced. However, following the announcement of the EU Referendum, the Home Office will not comment on whether the number of applications has risen.
Some experts have stated that there are many reasons for the predicted increase in the number of applications. Voting in the EU referendum and not paying fees for the NHS or if their child attends university was seen as the main reason for the increase in UK citizenship requests.
