Inquiry into Closure of Post Study Work Route
A new inquiry has been launched into the possible impacts for the UK of the closure of the Post Study Work route.
This route was closed by the Government in 2012, but was previously used to allow non-EU graduates to work in the UK for up to two years after the completion of their studies.
The inquiry is to be conducted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Migration, and will look in particular into the potential impact of this closure on universities, foreign students and local economies.
“The enormous contribution made by international students to our universities, local communities and the economy is widely recognised,” commented Paul Blomfield MP, who will be chairing the inquiry. “But work opportunities for non-EU students after graduation have been limited by the Government since 2012.”
“This inquiry will provide a valuable opportunity to examine all of the impacts of the Government’s decision to close the Post Study Work route and to draw on the experience of other countries,” he added. “We will be seeking evidence from universities, students and employers and making recommendations to the Government based on what we hear.”
The inquiry is expected to report on its findings in late 2014/early 2015.
