Tech Companies Affected by Government Clampdown on Visas

A number of top entrepreneurs have written an open letter to the Government warning that technology startups and businesses will be affected by the clampdown on immigration.

More than 230 investors and industry leaders have challenged David Cameron’s decision to further restrict the movement of skilled migrants, warning that such a challenge could damage the UK economy and seriously affect startup and technology companies.

Many high-profile companies such as lastminute.com and Shazam are backing the campaign that aims to improve the recruitment of skilled workers for smaller companies that require niche skills.

Apparent Government Clampdown on Immigration

The open letter addressing concerns regarding tier 2 visas comes after the Government stated that they intended to reduce the number of skilled workers coming to the UK after the General Election. Currently, the migration advisory committee is consulting on ways to tighten rules around the entrepreneur visa. This had led some to criticise any tightening of the law which many business owners believe will reduce the UK’s talent pool.

Currently many employers, especially in skilled workplaces have stated that the need for workers is severely behind supply.

The letter that had over 230 signatures from CEO’s and founders stated:

“We call on you to ensure that any future changes to the immigration system make it easier, not harder, for qualified digital entrepreneurs to come to the UK to start their business, and for growing startups to hire top international talent.

It is of course also vital that we continue to support the growth of digital skills within the UK, and we stand ready to do our part.”
